I use WordPress myself, now waiting for the version 2.5, coming in March or April with an widely enhanced Admin-section (as the rumor goes)
One definite advantage of wordpress is the vaste number of themes and plugins available, these enable you to adapt your wordpress exactly to fit to your purpose.
As i don’t know other blog software, i cant tell about differences
Wordpress evolves. Being a opebn source softrware it helps many to start blogging easily. Typepad, Blogger are other platforms which are used as much as Wordpress. Just see this blog entry for more comparitive study on Wordpress Vs. others.. http://sachistudio.com/blog/2007/03/17/comparing-blog-platforms/
I have tried WordPress, LiveSpaces, Edublogs and Blogger and I just seem to keep coming back to Blogger, it gives me the freedom to change things around as I want them, and not be restricted to what is available or having to pay for some parts of the service. It is as customizable as you want, there are plenty of widgets available and third party themes you can download/upload to meet your personal needs. Just did a review of 3 blogwriters if interested—Thanks Harold :)
http://mephistoblog.com/ is my favorite blogging system.
